"mother" as a neighborhood instead of a house the "children" are those who stay behind i.e. those kids who never quite make it out "companions" are passing through/moving in (junebug amy/the fighter? junebug might be sadder orz)
children/people considered to be "special" human experimentation? naming pattern? very distinct class levels feel: hunger games-ish? idea of a "scripture"

"the bird man" see: swamplandia and ava wrestles the alligator
The first four sounds he makes are familiar. The green-backed heron, the feral peacock, a bevy of coots. Then he makes another noise, keener, as close to an alligator bellow as I have heard a human make, but not quite that, exactly. A braided sound, a rainbow sound. I step closer, and closer still, in spite of myself. I try to imagine what species of bird could make a sound like that. A single note, held in an amber suspension of time, like my art class charcoal drawing of Icarus falling. It is sad and fierce all at once, alive with a lonely purity. It goes on and on, until my own lungs are burning.
"What bird are you calling?" I ask, finally, when I can't stand it any longer.
The Bird Man stops whistling. He grins, so that I can see all his pebbly teeth. He holds out a hand to me over the broth-thin water.
a la ballad of jack and rose single father and daughter, growing up in isolation extremely closely bonded, arguably too close introduction of a mother figure into the house
couple experiencing marital troubles take a trip to a summer house in a small town a murder takes place while they are there embroiled, etc. "timeless"?
mix of boardwalk empire, brighton rock, sharp objects touches of wake wood, hot fuzz

institution that specializes in memory/personality alteration e.g. brainwashing, shock therapy very much experimental medical/horror drama doctors with a definite advantage over patients etc.
The 11 Zodiacs pondered. How best to catch Virgo's heart? Aries headed east. Taurus had an idea. He would give Virgo a gift. Through the forest and over the mountain, he found a star. Gemini thought by the river, 'I will sing her a song.' He didn't know where she was, but he hoped his song would reach her. Cancer headed to the cape where Virgo waited. The sun was setting into the ocean. Would he finally see her? Leo was waiting for the sun to set into the ocean. Then Cancer showed up, and they began to fight. Into the ocean they fell... Watching the sunset from the cape, Virgo whispered, 'My only wish is to be with you now...' Libra was a perverse fellow. He would always walk in the opposite direction of the sun. Would he ever see Virgo?" Scorpio was very timid. He always looked at his shadow until one day he decided to look away. He walked up a hill. Sagittarius dashed through the night, defying the chilly northern wind that was stinging his right cheek. Impatient Capricorn ran up a hill toward the sun and fell asleep from exhaustion. Aquarius arrived late. He asked everyone, 'Who kissed Virgo?' Pisces said to Aquarius, 'Virgo made her choice. Go see him and he'll tell you the rest.' Their future was uncertain, but Scorpio and Virgo kissed in the light of dusk. That moment meant everything.
emotional detachment/lack of feelings sociopathy or maybe robots??? (or tack onto drugs verse idea) look into the idea of kinks/fetishes attachment through other means etc. hopefully this will still make sense to me later
"bright young things"; affluent families in a west egg-esque neighborhood; all of them are con artists/thieves one way or another; constantly bidding to outdo each other; house staff and associates form "teams"; children are a separate team?
possibly same gist but to a slightly more psychotic/sociopathic degree

“My wilderness is looking for a lesson. My tongue is looking to get cut out. I remember one time in a valley & being a kid in a green dress turning. But that was a long time ago. I’m not saying you were there. If you’re looking for a bargain, I’m a bargain. I can make my eyes much smaller if they trouble you. I can sing or not sing. Under your bed forever is a place for me. Stuck to your door like dead leaves is another. I’d like to remind you I come already assembled. I’d like to remind you of cold water & stars in the valley, big trees dripping sap on your hands– but it doesn’t have to be like that or anything. Just take me home. I’ll never lie again.” — Chelsea Whitton, "Apology"
